Swarthmore and Johns Hopkins University

Some of our SHH Swarthmore and SHH Johns Hopkins members went to the “Finding our Voices: Humanities in Medicine” conference at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP)!

According to the CHOP website, this conference was "an opportunity to all those who deliver healthcare to learn and practice narrative skills through writing, reflection, art observation and improvisation. It helped participants build empathy, self-awareness and connection with colleagues thereby affecting delivery of humanistic healthcare. Keynote address focused on the challenges of uncertainty in healthcare. Break-out sessions focused on participation with writing, advocacy, visual thinking strategies through art and observation, medical improv and program development in the humanities and podcasts as communication tools for sharing knowledge and stories.

Objectives:
• Use narrative skills to voice personal and professional experiences in healthcare
• Develop communication skills through visual thinking strategies and improvisation
• Utilize creativity to develop empathy and self-awareness to improve the performance of a multidisciplinary team in providing humanistic healthcare"

University of California, Irvine
